Nature of the proposed network "TransMol"

The proposed network "Transcriptional repression in stem cell differentiation: Molecular mechanisms of controlled reprogramming (TransMol)" joins internationally well-established scientific groups together with their scientific knowledge, experience and environment i) to provide state-of-the-art teaching in modern life science technologies that foster our understanding of transcriptional control in stem cell biology and physiology, and ii) to collaborate on the analysis of transcriptional repression mechanisms in cellular processes of reprogramming and differentiation. Data-driven versus hypothesis-driven research strategies of functional genomics will be compared and combined with cellular biology approaches to improve the efficiency of interdisciplinary and international research collaborations in regenerative medicine. European experts in functional genomics, in transcriptional gene regulation, structure determination, stem cell research, and computational biology have been brought together in the "TransMol" initiative to foster the exchange of novel ideas and concepts, to share experimental (wet-lab) as well as computational (dry-lab) knowledge and to expose young postgraduate students to high level research objectives and training in an international atmosphere. The participants coming from prestigious research environments are on the way to generate a conceptual and comprehensive understanding of mechanisms and processes that determine differentiation and reprogramming processes. The network will undertake the endeavour not only to analyze the relevance of KRAB zinc finger genes in human stem cell and tissue differentiation, but will also integrate current knowledge in murine model systems as well as genome-wide data sets on DNA methylation, histone modification and RNA profiling to reach a comprehensive understanding of molecular processes in cell differentiation. The scientific needs to combine research efforts function as guidelines to further the interdisciplinary exchange of education programmes. To fulfil the goals of "TransMol" a web-based training and teaching programme will be established to serve as a forum to discuss most recent advances in science related to the topics outlined in this application.
